Without a budget, renovation costs can quickly get out of hand!
Creating a realistic budget will keep you on track and reduce any unplanned renovation cost stresses.
Do you want to upgrade some fixtures and fittings, or completely redesign rooms? Deciding what you need and what you want from your renovation will have a huge impact on how much it will cost you.
When it comes to getting quotes for your renovation, it pays to shop around! Getting multiple quotes ensures that you aren’t paying more than you should be, or less than you should be! It’s tempting to go with the cheapest quote but be sure to check out their portfolio of past work, testimonials and reviews.
Get your plans checked before you finalise your budget. You can have an idea in your head of what your ideas may cost but until you go through your ideas with professionals who will be carrying out the work you won’t really know if you’re budgeting for.
Regardless of how much you budget for, a rule of thumb is to add 10-20% as a contingency. If you stay within your original budget then that is fantastic but the reality is when going through the renovation process there will likely be extra costs you didn’t account for, or you may upgrade some materials that will end up costing you more than you accounted for. Adding this buffer to your budget will eliminate any nasty and unaffordable surprises.
